Jack Johnson é um ex-surfista havaiano que após um sério acidente começou a levar o violão a sério enquanto se recuperava. Durante esta recuperação ele começou a compor e aprimorar sua técnica já que tocava desde os 14 anos. Jack se formou na universidade de Santa Barbara e é cineasta. Depois que se formou em 97-98, viajou pra realizar o filme “Thicker Than Water” e em 2001 lançou seu primeiro cd, “Brushfire Fairytales”.
